The 2011 recipient of the Edward R. Vandervoort Memorial Award is Norm Gaffney who was a scholarship athlete for MSU Ice Hockey Coach Amo Bessone from 1968-1972. He is a long-time ticket and suite holder for MSU hockey and has coordinated away bus trips with the MSU Blue Line Club. He is a long-time football season ticket holder and regularly travels to away games. He has been a benefactor for women’s basketball and has traveled with both the men’s and women’s teams. He has been a coach for youth hockey in the region and has assisted in special Olympic sports both as a volunteer and contributor. He regularly attends football and basketball banquets. He is also a regular participant in Spartan Fund activities and has been a board member for the MSU Varsity Alumni club and participates in golf and other functions. He is a long-time Downtown Coaches Club member and has participated in multiple club activities and has supported the club both personally and professionally. Besides being a tremendous Spartan, he is also active in the community, including Special Olympics, Lansing Public Schools and Okemos Public Schools. He has been a participant in all of the MSU booster groups and is always an active supporter of helping athletics achieve their success, both professionally and in the community.
